WIXOSS 'END OF YEAR' PARTY - A Day in Review

So, bright and early in the morning, us WIXOSS scrubs, dragged our weary selves out of bed, and to Summit 2 at Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre. Most of us reached around 8.45 - 9, and had some time to finalize any changes to the decklist, as well as having some practice games before the tournament. Registration then began at 9.35 and many players began to queue to get in.
The turnout was about 55 people, and after queuing, we each got a number and was able to enter the room. There was about 1 hour before the actual tournament started, so many players took the time to play some practice games, modded their decks, or when to buy some packs.

Many players tried their hands at buying packs before the tournament as there was quite a good deal going on. If you buy 6 packs, and you bring along a friend, both you and your friend get promo cards. Many players opened strong SRs, LRs and secrets, leading to trading and deals between the players.

At 10.30, the tournament finally started and players were randomly paired against each other by the judges. The format was a double elimination tournament, that cut to top 8 after 5 rounds. Players with 2 loses were automatically out of the tournament. Each round was a best of 1, and each match could last a most of 30~40 minutes, (unsure of the actual timing, didn't hear clearly + different responses from different judges) any match that exceeded the time limit would result in a loss for both players.  After each round, players with 2 loses could go to a designated area to collect their door gift of an anniversary promo, as well as a packet of Tama Christmas sleeves (10pcs). The remaining players had some time to wait before the next round.

It was a grueling battle with many unexpected deck surprises, as well as the fearsome strength of standard deck builds. It was a test of skill and luck. I personally used a 2-stop Iona deck which caught many players off guard.  After 5 gruesome rounds, the tournament finally cut to the top 8, with players with straight wins, and those with 1 lose on the last few rounds. This meant that players with 1 lost at the start and wins all the way after who are technically not out by double elimination rules are not able to get into the top 8. Not a great way to cut the top 8, but hey, time constraints, and judge's decisions are final.

So, at around 1pm, the top 8 began to faceoff, with many players gathering around the table to observe the matches and at the same time learn from the game play of the top 8.

Above are some of the pictures of the matches for the top 4, much high-skilled gameplay there! After 3 intensive heated Wixoss battles, we finally have a winner!!!

1st Place: Midoriko 3-stop

If you have been following the blog for some time, this decklist will look quite familiar to some of you. Mido-3 is a really stable deck that was able to curb both the aggro and control decks in the tournament today. With Lancer to crush life cloth and Big Bang to end the game, it really is a force to be reckoned with!

2nd Place: Umr Ut'ulls Gate

Umr Ut'ulls Gate is a really strong late game control deck. Just needing to survive the early game, the late game Angel-Ancient Weapon Cross combo is really a barrier to overcome. Ut'ulls Gate's Exceed 5 too, is a really strong defense against many decks. It is no surprise that Umr Ut'ulls Gate managed to be one of the top few decks in this tournament!

3rd Place: Tama -Mayu

As in Japan, it is no surprise to see some sort of Tama deck making it to the top few slots in a Wixoss Party. This Tama deck plays a very interesting build based around Weapon and Arm SIGNIs with the new support given to this type of Tama deck in WX10. It has been proven to work, so this deck may be a threat to look out for!

4th Place: Vermilion Ulith

As always, what follows Tama is always Ulith. As with Japan's WIXOSS Party as well, Ulith is always one of the few decks with just such good cards and a good deck synergy that they are very consistent. Ultih may not have received much support in the latest booster, but the deck being able to get up to the top 4 is a show of Ulith's strength.

We would like to congratulate the winners and once again thank them for  allowing us to take pictures of their decklists and matches, as well as recording down the match. It was a great event for Singapore Players to experience a WIXOSS Party for the first time, and hopefully there'll be more of such events in the future to keep WIXOSS from being too stale...
